We open, however, with a bravura sequence set during the initial crisis. The meat of the film’s action takes place seven months after the UK populace has been reduced to a pack of slavering, ravenous automota,when resettlement of the evacuated country finally seems possible under the auspices of a US Army administration. Things are no better in this sequel to Danny Boyle’s 2002 zombie actioner ‘28 Days Later…’: there are foot-and-mouth-style pyres near the Dome, a militarised DLR, the firebombing of the Isle of Dogs… ‘London’s mine!’ adolescent Andy cries as he charges across a deserted Tower Bridge. It was a moribund slum in ‘Children of Men’, under fascist lockdown in ‘V for Vendetta’ and will be suicide-bombed to buggery in next year’s ‘Incendiary’. It is a brand name, but it would still be a gamble for the studio, which now seems more risk-averse and is reducing the amount of material they produce.London seems to be taking a bit of a battering in SF and horror movies these days. Both Boyle and Garland are big enough names that they could lobby for a theatrical release, but one has to wonder if Disney is willing to put that investment into a long-awaited horror sequel. While Disney is investing in Fox's R-rated properties like Alien and Predator, they are primarily streaming releases. Now 20th Century Fox, titled 20th Century Pictures, is a subsidiary of the Walt Disney Company. 28 Days Later was released through Fox Searchlight, while 28 Weeks Later was Fox Atomic. ![]() The biggest obstacle in getting the film released is Disney. Garland could also step into the director's chair, bringing everything full circle for him. With it now being 21 years since the release of 28 Days Later, it still remains entirely possible that a third film will happen with Boyle directing. The sequel to the popular 1996 film Trainspotting opened in theaters 21 years after the first movie and reunited the original cast. The best frame of reference for 28 Months Later might be another Danny Boyle movie, T2: Trainspotting. Fans have been waiting years for a third film. While not quite matching the instant classic status of its predecessor, 28 Weeks Later still received positive reviews from critics and audiences and held its own in a crowded May release window where it went up against Spider-Man 3, Shrek the Third, and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End at the box office. With an audience score of 85% on Rotten Tomatoes, it became an instant favorite with genre fans and mainstream audiences alike.
